Breast Augmentation is one of the fastest growing plastic surgery procedures because of the great results that can be achieved, and also because of the quick recovery time.
In 2006, about 384,000 women had breast augmentation surgery, an incredible 250% increase over 1996. Moreover, in a recent study, 96% of women who had breast augmentations said they were either highly satisfied or satisfied with their results.
There are many reasons why women consider having breast augmentation surgery. Many tell us they just want to be able to buy a bathing suit that fits!
The majority of women increase from one to two cup sizes to obtain the flattering symmetrical figure they always wanted. Some come to Dr. Reath after they have had children and lost their breast size after breast-feeding. Women, who have had a lot of sagging of the breast, may choose to have a breast lift along with the enlargement.
During a consultation, women are able to try on implant sizers in order for Dr. Reath to understand the results they want to achieve. Our patients say it is very helpful to them to visualize their results. He will give his professional opinion based on each woman's goal and body type.
Most of the implants Dr. Reath uses are filled with a saline solution (saltwater) and can be placed either over or under the chest muscle wall. However, more and more women are asking for silicone implants which are now available.
Note: It is normal for women to have one breast that is slightly larger than the other. However there are many women who suffer from severe breast asymmetry. Finding clothes that fit is a major problem. (Imagine the difficulty picking out a wedding dress.) The good news is that it can be corrected. Breast augmentation on one side and/or a breast lift on the other side can be performed to even out the size and shape of the breasts. Scroll all the way down to see photos of what can be down to correct breast asymmetry.
Silicone is Back!
The FDA recently (November 2006) issued an approval that will allow the unrestricted use of silicone breast implants for most women. In the early 1990’s, silicone breast implants were removed from the market due to safety concerns. However, data that has been gathered since that time has proven these implants to be safe. This data was gathered over the last 14 years through an adjunct study that allowed the use of silicone implants for only very select patients. Dr. Reath is one of the plastic surgeons who participated in this study, and has been using silicone breast implants since that time.
We now offer silicone breasts implants for women seeking breast enlargement, as long as they are over the age of 22. (The FDA feels that in some women breast development may not be complete until age 22.) Silicone implants can also be used in any women seeking breast reconstruction, or the correction of developmental abnormalities.
Plastic surgeons, who have not had experience with silicone implants through this study over the last 14 years, must complete a device education course prior to using these implants. Dr. Reath has been using silicone implants as an important part of his practice for over 20 years, and can offer them immediately. There are important differences in the use of saline and silicone implants. Understanding these differences comes with experience.
There has been so much talked and written about silicone implants for more than a decade. This has resulted in confusion on the part of many patients. This action by the FDA truly clears the air on the safety and use of silicone implants. And, most importantly, it has given women considering breast surgery important choices in the type of implant they wish to receive. Dr. Reath and his staff will continue to inform and educate patients about their options, so you can be confident in your implant decision.

Women who are unhappy with sagging in their breasts often choose to have a breast lift. Usually this sagging is a result of pregnancy and breast-feeding, but not always. Frequently a modest implant is used in conjunction with the lift to restore fullness in the upper part of the breast. This is optional and depends on the goal of the individual patient.
During a breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, the breast is lifted by removing the excess skin. In many women a delicate incision around the nipple area (areola) is all that is needed. In others, who have a large amount of excess skin, the incision will need to be extended.
Dr. Reath performed these breast lifts with implants last year:
Before & After (Peri-Augment/Mastopexy): This patient is 44 years old. She is 5'4" and weighs 119 pounds. She was unhappy about the size and sagginess of her breasts. Dr. Reath performed a peri-areolar mastopexy using 360cc Mentor High Profile implants, which were placed underneath the muscles. She is delighted with her results.

Correction of breast asymmetry:
The good news is that both operations are done as outpatient procedures and do not involve an overnight stay in the hospital. The entire operation is done under general anesthesia and takes about an hour or longer if a breast lift is also performed. At the end of the operation, patients are placed in a special bra to support their breasts. After recovery from the anesthesia, they go home in the care of their family.
Most patients are up and about the day after a breast augmentation or breast lift but instructed to rest and avoid any lifting. About a week after the operation patients are seen in the office to check their surgical sites and instruct them in massage and stretching exercises. Expect the stitches to be removed in about a week.
Most women are able to return to normal activities in 7 to 10 days and usually need no more than a week off from work.
