Over 20% of the patients we see, both surgical and nonsurgical, are men. Surprised? Most people are. But men want to feel good about how they look too. Like women, they want trimmer waists and fewer wrinkles.
Some men have been unhappy with a certain part of their body all of their lives and are becoming aware of what can be accomplished under the care of a board-certified plastic surgeon. Others watch parts of their body change as they get older and decide to do something about it. Some are concerned their necks no longer look good in a dress shirt. Many want to get rid of the weight that accumulates in the abdomen and hip rolls. Others target the “droopy” look around their eyes.
One trend we have really enjoyed this year is the number of married couples who become patients. Often men are impressed with the great results of their wife’s Botox and Juvederm treatments and schedule a consultation. Just as many times, the men go first and the wives want to keep up with their young-looking guys.
In fact, WBIR recently interviewed Dr. Reath and one of his colleagues at UT, Dr. Chun, about the increase in the number of men choosing to have plastic surgery.
Of concern to almost every man who comes to see us is down time. If you are a man considering surgery, recovery can be easier than you might expect. Men retain their skin elasticity longer, bruise less easily and the areas of fat beneath the skin tend to be firmer than those in women.
This page is an overview of surgical procedures for men. If you are interested in non-surgical wrinkle treatments for men check out the Guy's Guide to Botox and Fillers. We also have information about laser procedures including prices on laser hair removal for men in the Guy's Guide to Laser Treatments . If you are interested in skin care products that Dr. Reath uses and recommends for his male patients, check out our Guy's Guide To Skin Care.
In talking to our male patients, the one thing they overwhelmingly tell us is that they hate having to wait for doctor's appointments.
If this sounds like you, please read our On-Time Pledge.
Popular Surgeries for Men:
Body Lifts and Tummy Tucks For Men After Massive Weight Loss- Many men find themselves with excess skin that they are unable to get rid of after losing a large amount of weight. This can happen by diet and exercise or because they have had gastric bypass surgery. Depending on where your excess skin is located, Dr. Reath may perform a circumferential body lift or just a tummy tuck to remove the stretched out skin. (Yes! Dr. Reath performs tummy tucks on men.) Removing skin after weight loss is actually the second most common procedure Dr. Reath performs on men, after male breast reduction.
Liposuction of hip rolls, abdomen and neck- If you have areas of your body that are out of proportion to the rest of your body, and these areas won’t go away even when you are working out, liposuction may be your answer. Liposuction is the most popular surgical procedure for men for good reason. The recovery time is not as long as you might think. Sometimes it is the only way to get rid of fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise.
Eyelid Surgery- Heredity as well as the aging process affects the appearance of the eyes. Eyelid surgery corrects drooping upper lids and puffy bags under the eyes. These are the features that make men look older and more tired than they feel, and sometimes even interfere with their vision.
Breast Reduction for Men to correct Gynecomastia- Gynecomastia, or enlargement of the male breast area, is a condition that is rarely talked about, though it's actually quite common. Gynecomastia affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. It may affect only one breast or both. Dr. Reath uses liposuction to remove fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases excess skin is also removed, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured.
Facelift- A third of our facelift patients are men who want to reverse the laxity in their skin caused by gravity and aging. The areas most improved are the jaw, the neck and the fold from the nose to the side of the mouth (nasolabial fold).
Rhinoplasty (Surgery of the Nose)- Whether they are dissatisfied with the way their nose naturally developed or they injured it playing sports, men find that a rhinoplasty can help reshape the nose to look and work better.
Otoplasty (Surgery to Correct Protruding Ears)- After this surgery, most men tell us they wished they had done sooner to avoid all the teasing.
Here are some photos of Dr. Reath's male patients:
Before and After Male Tummy Tuck: He is 5’11” and weighs 220 pounds. Here is a 55-year-old man who came to Dr. Reath after losing 70 pounds through diet and exercise. Even though he was very fit and worked out 6 days a week, he had a large area of excess skin remaining from the weight-loss that was interfering with his daily activities. Dr. Reath performed an abdominoplasty without any liposuction or muscle repair. He is very pleased with the contour of his abdomen since his surgery and his quality of life is much improved. The “after” pictures were taken 6 months after his procedure and his incisions continue to lighten and fade over time.
Before and After Liposuction: This is a 31-year-old man who was concerned about Gynecomastia (male enlarged breasts) and fat in his abdomen and hip rolls. Despite an aggressive exercise regimen, these areas refused to budge. Dr. Reath performed liposuction on his chest and abdomen with these excellent results.
Before and After Body Lift- He is 6’2” and weighs 185 pounds. Here is a 25-year-old man who came to our office concerned about excess skin in his mid-section after losing 125 pounds through diet and exercise. Because the excess skin to be removed was on his abdomen and his posterior, Dr. Reath performed a circumferential body lift to remove and contour both areas in one procedure. He is pictured here six months after his surgery, a new man. His incisions continue to fade and improve over time.
Before and After 4-Lid Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) with Browlift: This patient is a 49-year-old male who expressed concern about his saggy and puffy eyes. Dr. Reath performed a upper and lower lid blepharoplasty and an endoscopic brow lift. After his surgery he told us that his children remarked they didn't know that he had such pretty eyes.
Before and After Treatment of Gynecomastia: This high-school senior had been self-conscious about his enlarged breasts (gynecomastia) for four long years when he came to our office. Dr. Reath used ultrasound assisted liposuction to remove the fatty tissue surrounding his breasts and he is relieved and happy with his new chest.
Before and After Treatment of Gynecomastia: Here is a patient of Dr. Reath's who had issues with gynecomastia since puberty regardless of his weight and fitness. He lost 40 pounds through diet and exercise. Still, he realized that his discomfort about his chest was interfering with activities he wanted to do with his children and the clothes he could wear. He is very pleased with his results and his quality of life since his surgery. He is happy wearing normal t-shirts and enjoying his kids.
Before and After Treatment of Gynecomastia: This patient is a teenaged male who was troubled by breast development on his chest, known as Gynecomastia. This created problems for him in terms of dealing with his classmates. Dr. Reath used liposuction to treat this area. The patient is happy and feels the results have improved his overall confidence.
