Hey Facebook fans, we’ve got a new game for you. It’s called Truth-O-Meter Tuesday, and it’s like a quiz show.  If you get the answer right, you get the chance to win some cool stuff from our office. And, it’s a chance, hopefully, to  learn something about plastic surgery along the way. Here are the rules:

Every Tuesday morning (very early before I start operating) I will post a question. You have all day Tuesday including Tuesday night to answer it (polls close at midnight). Everyone who posts the correct answer on our Facebook page will have a chance to win the prize. (We choose the winner on Random.org by entering in the number of correct answers. It works great and helps us seem very technologically advanced.)

We will post the correct answer and announce the winner (selected by random.org) by the end of business on Wednesday. Here are the possible answers: True, Mostly True, Don’t Know Yet, Mostly False and False.  The degree of “truthfulness” will be pretty obvious, and we won’t be splitting hairs with you.

The majority of the answers will be found on our website, blog posts and Your Beauty Magazine, so if you get stuck, that’s the place to look.  Are you up for this?  Game on!

pink breast cancer ribbonAnswer: False, of course. We had 56 correct answers so we will be making a donation of $280 towards breast cancer research. Thanks especially for playing this week!

pink breast cancer ribbon10/12/2010 After a mastectomy, breast reconstruction is possible with either implants or a flap of your own tissue.

pink breast cancer ribbon10/5/2010 Many women with breast cancer are not informed of their options regarding breast reconstruction.

9/22/2010 A breast reduction and a breast lift cannot be done at the same time: it takes two operations.

Answer: True. We continue to see too many patients in our office who are unhappy with their results or who have problems after having plastic surgery by a non-plastic surgeon. Answer: True! Dr. Reath tells all in the video.

8/10/2010 This Truth-O-Meter Tuesday question deals with complications after cosmetic surgery. Thankfully, these are not common but they can still occur, as with any type of surgery. So the question is: Medical insurance usually will pay for the cost of caring for complications after cosmetic surgery
Answer: False. Many people are surprised to learn that the majority of major medical health insurance policies now exclude treatment of medical complications if those complications are a result of an elective aesthetic surgical procedure. All of our cosmetic surgery patients who are eligible are enrolled in the ASPS-endorsed CosmetAssure program which covers the cost of caring for complications after cosmetic surgery. Dr. Reath explains more and announces the winner in the video.

8/3/2010 Silicone sheeting and topical creams are equally effective in improving post-operative scars.
Answer: False. Silicone sheeting does a much better job than scar creams, which is why we include it in our surgical recovery kits.

Dr. Reath explains why and Mandi announces the winner on the video.

7/27/2010 The week's Truth-O-Meter Tuesday is inspired by the heat we have all been experiencing, and it has to do with hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. Here's the question: Axillary (or armpit) hyperhidrosis can be effectively treated with Botox injections.
Answer: True! We had a record number of correct answers.

And the winner is.....

7/20/2010 In order to get a good result from a breast lift (or mastopexy), you have to have implants placed.
Prize: $100 Giftcard
Answer: False. If you are happy with the size of your breasts, then implants are not needed.

7/13/2010 The results of liposuction are permanent.
Prize: $100 Giftcard
Answer: Mostly True. For this question, we accepted all answers because the fat cells that are removed are gone permanently. But, if you gain weight after liposuction other fat cells can expand. Dr. Reath explains below:

7/6/2010 Gynecomastia, enlargement of the male breast area, affects up to 60% of the male population.
Prize: $100 Giftcard
Answer: True.

And the winner is......

6/29/2010 The membership of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery are surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Prize: $100 Giftcard
Answer: False!

And the winner is.......

6/22/2010 9 out of 10 people say they have significantly less pain with Juvederm XC than with regular Juvederm.
Prize: $100 Giftcard
Answer: True!
A new split-face control study demonstrated that 93% of the patients treated with Juvederm XC had significantly less pain than when treated with the non-lidocaine formulation of Juvederm.

And the winner is....

6/15/2010 A tummy tuck will remove stretch marks.
Prize: $100 Giftcard
Answer: Mostly True. A tummy tuck removes excess skin from the abdomen so if the stretch marks are on that part of the skin, they will be gone. Sometimes the stretch marks are further up on the abdomen and those won't go away, although they will be repositioned lower. Of course, a tummy tuck won't treat stretch marks that are not on the tummy. We also accepted "mostly false" if that was your reasoning.

And the winner is.....

6/8/2010 Most Americans age equally on both sides of their faces.

Prize: $100 Giftcard
Answer: False.
The majority of people in the United States have more facial wrinkles on the left side than the right side. Any guesses as to why?It has to do with driving. If you spend a lot of time driving a car, the left side of your face is exposed more frequently to damaging UVA rays than the right. Many of us don't think to put on sunscreen when we are out running errands even if we would never go without it at the beach. Since UVA rays travel through glass, and most sunscreens protect you only from UVB rays, it is important to choose a product which blocks out the UVA's.

And the winner is......

6/1/2010 Botox is a better and more effective product than Dysport.
Prize: $100 Giftcard
Answer: Don't Know Yet. Botox and Dysport are very comparable products although they work differently. We can't say that one is actually "better" than the other so we are accepting "False" and "Mostly False" as well.

And the winner is.......

5/25/2010 Antioxidant serums can not protect against free radicals which can cause aging and skin cancers.
Prize: $100 Giftcard plus a special summer surprise- a travel size Clarisonic!
Answer: False

And the winner is........

5/18/2010 Saline breast implants are available to women of any age.
Prize: $100 Giftcard
Answer: False. The FDA has restricted the use of saline breast implants for augmentation to women over 18. However, many who answered did great research and found out that women of any age can have breast implants for reconstruction. So if that was your reasoning we are also accepting Mostly True. Great job!

And the winner is........

5/11/2010 If you have tanned skin, you cannot have IPL (Intense Pulsed Light Treatments or Limelight) but you can have laser hair removal.
Prize: Fake Bake Self-Tanning Kit
Answer: True. Anyone with a light or medium color skin may be a candidate for LimeLight IPL, but those with darker skin tones may not.  If you have tanned skin or plan on being out in the sun, you should not have Limelight.  Most people schedule their Limelight treatments in fall and winter to erase the sun-damage from the previous summer. Our Cutera Yag Laser can do laser hair removal on dark or tanned skin. In fact it is one of the very few lasers on the market that can.

And the winner is......

5/4/2010 An abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a weight-loss operation.
Prize: Special Mother's Day Edition! Your choice of any item from our store.
Answer: False. An abdominoplasty or tummy tuck, is designed to change the shape of your abdomen, not to reduce your weight.

And the winner is......

4/27/10 Laser Liposuction, also known as "Smart Liposuction" achieves results that you cannot get with other types of liposutcion.
Prize: $50 Gift Card
Answer: False. To learn more, read Dr. Reath's blog post about Smart Liposuction.

And the winner is.......

4/20/10 Fractional lasers treat only a fraction of the skin at a time which leads to a shorter healing period.
Prize: ColoreScience Mineral Sunscreen
Answer: True

And the winner is.......

4/13/10 Tennessee law requires physicians to have plastic surgery training to perform plastic surgery.
Prize: DIMRS
Answer: False
