The appearance of the eyes is affected both by heredity and the aging process (gravity again!). Eyelid surgery corrects drooping upper lids and puffy bags under the eyes. These are the features that make people look older and more tired than they feel, and sometimes even interfere with their vision.
People can choose to simply repair their upper eyelids only, lower eyelids only or all four lids at a time.
During upper eyelid blephoroplasty, a delicate incision is made in the natural crease above the eye and excess skin is removed. For the lower lids, excess skin and fat pockets are removed by a tiny incision in the eyelash region.
Before & After (Bleph): This patient is a 54-year-old female who is concerned about the excessive skin of her eyelids. Dr. Reath performed an upper and lower blepharoplasty and removed the excess skin giving her the more youthful look pictured here.

The operation can be done under local anesthesia with sedation, or under a general anesthetic on an outpatient bases. It is frequently combined with other facial procedures such as a facelift or forehead lift. Once patients have recovered from the anesthetic, they go home in the care of their family.
The recovery period is usually 7 to 10 days. Expect to be able to read and watch TV after two or three days and have stitches removed less than a week after surgery. Once the stitches are removed, eye makeup can be used.
