There is a remarkable new hyaluronic acid filler from our favorite family of fillers: Juvederm. You have probably seen the ads with a woman and a bunch of apples. While we don’t really groove on the apple analogy, we are thrilled with the results we’re seeing with our Knoxville patients.
Since it received clearance by the FDA last year, it has become one of our “go-to” fillers. We’re not the only ones singing Voluma’s praises. New Beauty picked Voluma as the “Best Anti-Aging Treatment” and Allure gave it the “Beauty Breakthrough Award”.
So why all the excitement about another hyaluronic filler coming to the market? What makes Juvederm Voluma XC so different from other fillers and the regular Juvederm XC we all know and love?
Voluma Lifts and Lasts
Juvederm Voluma is the first and only HA filler cleared by the FDA to restore volume loss in the cheeks, a major factor in the aging equation. Think about it like this: Juvederm Voluma XC lifts, as opposed to the other products which fill in lines.
Volume loss in the cheeks is the major reason we lose our youthful profile when we age.
Plastic surgeons have known this for decades. A well-performed facelift actually repositions the cheek fat that sags as a result of gravity over time. Just to be clear, Voluma can’t reposition cheek fat, but its thicker cross-linked formula adds volume in a way that restores a more-youthful contour to the midface (or a more pleasing Ogee curve if you speak medicalese.) So if you’re not quite ready for a facelift but have started noticing some changes, Juvederm Voluma could be just what you’re looking for.
The subtle lift achieved with Juvederm Voluma XC can make a dramatic difference. Patients surveyed in the clinical trials said they look up to 5 years younger. The best part? Juvederm Voluma XC lasts up to two years.
A side-benefit of restoring volume to the cheek area is that it can also improve wrinkles and lines in other areas of the face, particularly the nasolabial folds and around the eyes. This varies from patient to patient depending on the depth and location of the wrinkles.
It’s becoming clear that the aesthetic non-surgical field is evolving. Rather than just chasing individual wrinkles and filling them in, we can now take a more holistic approach by improving the 3-D effects of aging in the midface first and filling the rest in later. So you can see how well Juvederm Voluma works hand-in-hand with its sister product Juvederm and why we are delighted to have it in our anti-aging arsenal.

Our Nurse Injector Jill Maze, RN has over fourteen years experience injecting fillers, twelve of them in our practice. Because there are so many changes and new products in the injectable wrinkle treatment world, we are committed to make sure she is in the know. Every year she travels the country to train with the leaders in her field to stay current on all the new advances for her patients. (Lucky for her, the classes always seem to be in great locations: Florida, Nashville, Las Vegas, San Diego to name a few.) She has been using fillers to volumize the cheeks for several years now so the process is not new to her.
2 Words: Flexible Cannulas
A perfect example of benefits of Jill’s advanced training is how she embraced the use of flexible cannulas for injecting fillers over two years ago. Not only are they safer for our patients, but they are less painful than needles with much less bruising. Jill was the first in Knoxville to inject with this new technology and as far as we know she is the only injector in town to use these miracle-workers. You should never get fillers without them.
Here is a Truth-O-Meter Tuesday Video where Dr. Reath and Jill talk about the then-new flexible cannulas and the difference they make to patients:
Our office has been awarded Black Diamond Status by Allergan. Allergan not only distributes Voluma and Botox, they also supply Natrelle implants and the popular eyelash-growing drug Latisse.
What does this mean to you? It means that we have lots and lots of practice helping patients achieve the results they want. It means that our practice is in the top 1% of all providers by volume in the whole United States. Pretty good for Knoxville, Tennessee right?
We are grateful to all our patients for their loyalty to our practice and kind referrals, which helped us achieve this honor. Thanks y’all.
Juvederm Voluma is made of hyaluronic acid while Radiesse is calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA). Here is why we prefer the Voluma’s thick cross linked hyaluronic acid to Radiesse’s calcium hydroxylapatite formula.
We will still be carrying Radiesse as we have many patients who love it. Radiesse can be used in areas like the marionette lines and the nasolabial folds. It remains to be seen if Voluma is be too thick to use in areas other than volumizing the cheeks. Both Radiesse and Voluma should never be used in the lips or under the eyes.
Here is Allergan’s Patient Education Video about Juvederm Voluma. It has interviews with patients who have had treatments and their Juvederm Voluma before and after photos.
Jill is an extraordinarily gifted Nurse Injector. Working under the direct supervision of Dr. Reath since 2008, her extensive training and gentle touch is a winning combination. Her patients attest to her caring bedside manner, her skilled professionalism and her aesthetic expertise. Many drive all the way from Nashville and Atlanta because she is that good.
Every year Jill travels across the country to train with the most renowned experts in cosmetic injectables to refine her skills and bring back new techniques to our patients. This area requires a unique blend of artistry and science as well as the need to stay current, so Jill will continue her travels in the U.S. and Canada to observe the leaders in her field.
This advanced training is why she has been using flexible cannulas for the past four years to inject fillers. Flexible cannulas are not only safer than needles, they cause far less bruising and discomfort for her patients. She is the only injector in Knoxville to use them.
She is an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgical Nurses. She was in the first class in the country to attend the Advanced Injector Competence Training Course designed by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons in Las Vegas. In addition, she received specialized instruction on techniques for using Botox® for areas other than the upper face. She is also trained and experienced with the recently FDA-approved filler Juvederm Voluma.
Besides she is so accomplished, many patients are surprised that Jill is completely down to earth and has a wicked sense of humor. It’s pretty common for us to hear them giggling down the hall into their ice packs as they leave her room.
