  • If you have one or two areas of your body that are out of proportion to the rest of your body.
  • If you have tried diet and exercise and have areas that stubbornly refuse to budge regardless of your weight.
  • If you have your mother’s thighs or your father’s hip rolls.

Consider Liposuction
Liposuction is one of the most popular and fastest-growing procedures in plastic surgery here in Knoxville with local women and men, and those who visit from Johnson City, Cookeville, Cleveland, and beyond. It is the most popular plastic surgery procedure among men. There is a good reason for this increase in popularity. Liposuction is safe, has a short recovery time, and often can produce the best results for people who have exhausted other alternatives.

It is important for people to understand that liposuction is not for weight reduction. Dr. Reath and Dr. Walker perform liposuction on areas of the body that are out of proportion to the overall shape of the body. Usually, the areas of concern are areas that have not been affected through weight reduction or exercise. They are just always there.

Typical areas that are successfully treated with liposuction include the outer thighs (saddlebags), hip rolls (love handles), abdomen, back, and chest (particularly in men).

Definitely. While many patients benefit from liposuction on its own, Dr. Reath and Dr. Walker may use it to complement the results of other plastic surgery procedures, including:

Beware of “Awake” Liposuction

Great Article in Self Magazine About Awake Plastic Surgery

selfmagazinecoverjanuary2011Self Magazine published an extensive article (January) exploring a new national concern: physicians who are advertising and performing complex liposuction procedures in their office under local anesthesia.

These doctors are untrained in plastic surgery and don’t have the credentials to perform procedures in a hospital or certified surgery center. With a shocking lack of concern for patient safety, they are setting up operating rooms in their offices and performing liposuction and breast augmentation while their patients are awake.

Here is Dr. Reath’s blog on the subject

Awake Surgery: The Nightmare You Don’t Sleep Through

Just before Christmas, one of my Facebook fans suggested to me that I read a recent article in Self magazine entitled “Wide Awake and Under the Knife” (thanks, Dianna).  Now, having read it, I feel compelled to talk about it. The topic here is what is referred to as “awake surgery” or plastic surgery under … Read more »

Can Fat Come Back After Liposuction?

In the video, Dr. Reath discusses what happens if you gain weight after having liposuction. He does a great job of explaining something that causes a lot of confusion for many people.

Liposuction Surgery

The good news is that liposuction is done on an outpatient basis so patients can go home in the care of their families once they have recovered from anesthesia. Areas that have been treated are placed in compressive garments.

Liposuction Recovery

Helping our patients manage a speedy recovery is one of our primary missions. Most patients are up and about the day after liposuction. There will be some swelling and bruising after liposuction. Recovery depends on the number of areas treated. The garments are worn for 4 to 6 weeks to aid the healing. Most of the swelling is gone in about 2 to 3 weeks; however, there will be small amounts of swelling that may last longer. (After the initial swelling is gone, we recommend Spanx Slim Cognito garments and include them in the price of your surgery. For men who have correction of gynecomastia, we have Adidas compression undershirts which are also included.) Dr. Reath and Dr. Walker instruct their patients on how to perform deep massage on the areas that have been treated, which helps with the resolution of swelling and firmness. Most people can return to normal activities in 10 to 14 days.

Safety First

You should have a BMI of 30 or less to be a good candidate for liposuction. Here’s a handy BMI calculator so you can see if you are in the safe range to consider plastic surgery.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Calculator for Adults

BMI is a number calculated from a person's weight and height. BMI provides a fairly reliable indicator of body fatness for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
