Over 20% of the patients we see, both surgical and nonsurgical, are men. Surprised? Most people are. But men want to feel good about how they look too. Like women, they want trimmer waists and fewer wrinkles.
Some men have been unhappy with a certain part of their body all of their lives and are becoming aware of what can be accomplished under the care of a board-certified or board-eligible plastic surgeon. Others watch parts of their body change as they get older and decide to do something about it. Some are concerned their necks no longer look good in a dress shirt. Many want to get rid of the weight that accumulates in the abdomen and hip rolls. Others target the “droopy” look around their eyes.
One trend we have really enjoyed this year is the number of married couples who become patients. Often men are impressed with the great results of their wife’s BOTOX and Juvederm treatments and schedule a consultation. Just as many times, the men go first and the wives want to keep up with their young-looking guys.
In fact, WBIR recently interviewed Dr. Reath and one of his colleagues at UT, Dr. Chun, about the increase in the number of men choosing to have plastic surgery.
Of concern to almost every man who comes to see us is downtime. If you are a man considering surgery, recovery can be easier than you might expect. Men retain their skin elasticity longer, bruise less easily and the areas of fat beneath the skin tend to be firmer than those in women.

Body Lifts and Tummy Tucks After Massive Weight Reduction- Many men find themselves with excess skin that they are unable to get rid of after losing a large amount of body fat. This can happen by diet and exercise or because they have had gastric bypass surgery. Depending on where your excess skin is located, Dr. Reath or Dr. Walker may perform a circumferential body lift or just a tummy tuck to remove the stretched-out skin. (Yes, Dr. Reath and Dr. Walker perform tummy tucks on men.) Removing skin after significant weight reduction is actually the second most common procedure our surgeons perform on men, after male breast reduction.
Liposuction of Hip Rolls, Abdomen and Neck- If you have areas of your body that are out of proportion to the rest of your body, and these areas won’t go away even when you are working out, liposuction may be your answer. Liposuction is the most popular surgical procedure for men for good reason. The recovery time is not as long as you might think. Sometimes it is the only way to get rid of fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise.
Eyelid Surgery- Heredity as well as the aging process affects the appearance of the eyes. Eyelid surgery corrects drooping upper lids and puffy bags under the eyes. These are the features that make men look older and more tired than they feel, and sometimes even interfere with their vision.
Chest Reduction for Men to correct Gynecomastia– Gynecomastia, or enlargement of the male breast area, is a condition that is rarely talked about, though it’s actually quite common. Gynecomastia affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. It may affect only one breast or both. Dr. Reath and Dr. Walker use liposuction to remove fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases excess skin is also removed, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured.
Facelift– A full third of our patients are men who want to reverse the laxity in their skin caused by gravity and aging. The areas most improved are the jaw, the neck, and the fold from the nose to the side of the mouth (nasolabial fold).
Otoplasty (Surgery to Correct Protruding Ears)- After this surgery, most men tell us they wished they had done it sooner to avoid all the teasing.
One thing that nearly everyone asks is how much plastic surgery procedures cost, so we include our surgery prices right here on our website. Amazing, right? The cost of surgery with Dr. Reath or Dr. Walker includes both surgical and anesthesia fees, our exclusive recovery kit, and all follow-up visits.
If you are interested in having more than one procedure, you’ll save a little bit of money having them done at the same time. We’ll give you an exact quote for your surgical plan during your consultation with Dr. Reath or Dr. Walker.
Note: We offer a discount for our patients who would like to pay with a wire transfer or check instead of using a credit card or financing.
