Guy’s Guide to Laser Treatments

We see a larger proportion of men in for laser treatments in our office than for any other procedures, surgical or non-surgical. It could be the high-tech nature of the treatments or just the fact that they are effective with little or no down time.

XEO_newThe most popular laser procedure for men is actually laser hair removal. The most common area is the back, although other areas of the face and body are popular as well. (We haven’t performed many back waxing procedures since Steve Carrell’s painful scene in The Forty Year Old Virgin.)

The laser is also used to get rid of red veins and men, in particular, tend to form broken capillaries. Because laser is the only effective way to remove these little red veins around the nose and face, we see a large male population for laser vein therapy.

Other laser procedures of particular interest to men are Laser Genesis, which treats red, ruddy skin on your face, and Limelight IPL which gets rid of dark sun spots from spending too much time in the sun without sunscreen.

In talking to our male patients, the one thing they overwhelmingly tell us is that they hate having to wait for doctor’s appointments. If this sounds like you, check out our On-Time Pledge.

Laser Hair Removal For Men

Great for: All skin types
Not for: Blonde, white, red or grey hair

It is sometimes hard to tell how many treatments you might need in advance. Hair develops in phases and we can only treat hair in its active, visible stage.  Therefore, the number of treatments depends on how quickly the untreated hairs appear.  For significant clearance, most men require a course of four to six treatments, which are spaced at least six to eight weeks apart.

Patients will feel a series of short snaps, somewhat like a rubber band snapping, but no local anesthesia or pain medication is necessary.  Sensitivity varies from person to person, and we have a topical blocker that works quite well. Treatment times vary depending, of course, on the size of the area, but it typically about 45 minutes for a man’s back.

The beauty of the technology is that it effectively destroys the hair itself without harming the surrounding skin.  You may be a little red afterward, but that typically goes away in a matter of hours.  We ask that you shave beforehand (if you can reach the area to be lasered) since the treatment targets the hair follicle itself – not the hair.

Everyone asks if it is permanent. Yes, it is totally permanent.  The hair we treat with the laser will not grow back, and patients can expect an 85 percent reduction in hair after four to six treatments.  As we age our hair patterns change, so this does not prevent the possibility of new hair growth over the years.

Laser Vein Therapy For Men

Great for: Red veins, spider veins and capillaries on the face and body
Not for: Varicose veins (raised veins that are large and twisted)

The laser technology doesn’t involve needles and it minimizes any bruising or irritation of the surrounding skin. We can treat the very small veins on the face up to some of the larger veins on the legs. The best candidates for laser vein treatments are those with tiny to mid-size veins on their face or body. Most men tend to get them around their nose area.

Dr. Reath and Licensed Aesthetician Heather McNeal discuss treating veins with laser in this recent Truth-O-Meter Tuesday video.

The number of treatments needed depends on the quantity, color and size of the vessels being treated, but typically one to three treatments are sufficient. Each treatment typically takes 5 to 15 minutes. Patients may experience a mild to moderate stinging sensation as the pulses of light are delivered to the skin.  A cooling mechanism is built into the handpiece to minimize the discomfort and protect the skin’s surface.  No local anesthesia or pain medication is necessary.
