The writing’s on the wall. We’re obsessed with the SkinPen.

Dr. Reath Recommends SkinPen
Great For: Improving lines around the lips, crepey skin under the eyes, acne scars and overall skin tightening.
Not For: The day before a big event.

Have you ever heard of a skin care procedure which gets rave reviews from everyone who tries it? So far that is our experience with the SkinPen. We kid you not, everyone on our staff, including Dr. Reath, counts the days until they can have their next treatment and our patients are pre-booking their SkinPen appointments a month in advance.

You may have heard of something called “microneedling”. Well, the SkinPen is essentially the same idea but with a much more advanced, comfortable and predictable delivery.
SkinPen Collagen Therapy
SkinPen’s advanced microchanneling system stimulates the growth of healthy new skin that’s full of fresh collagen. It plumps the skin from below, repairing lines and other skin imperfections. With three SkinPen treatments you can reverse years of sun damage, smooth acne scars and wipe out wrinkles with just a day of social downtime after each one.

It’s adjustable.

One of the best things about the SkinPen is that the depth is adjustable so it can be used on the entire face regardless of skin thickness. It’s uniquely effective in the delicate area around the eyes (the periorbital region) and around the mouth (the perioral region). These areas often display the first signs of aging and can be the most challenging to treat. We are so impressed with the results that we have virtually replaced ablative fractional laser in favor of three SkinPen treatments.

It plays well with others.

We often combine SkinPen treatments with our facial patients to get the best results from both. A facelift, for example, does a great job at tightening the skin in the jowl area and the neck, but doesn’t touch the lines around the mouth or improve overall skin texture. Botox does a great job to prevent crow’s feet wrinkles from forming but doesn’t rejuvenate and plump the skin beside and underneath the eyes. That’s where the SkinPen comes in.

Don’t be put off by the whole “needle” thing.

The one thing everyone wants to know is “does it hurt?” We’re not going to lie to you, this is the most aggressive skin care treatment we do in our office, with the results to match. The medical numbing cream we use really helps and although it’s not super-relaxing like a facial, most patients give it about a 2 on the 1-10 pain scale. So it is pretty accurate to say that it’s quite easily tolerated. Everyone we’ve talked to so far said they would “definitely do it again”.

The results are something to write home about.

In terms of recovery, it’s not nearly as bad as the results would suggest. Expect to be red, in some cases very red, for the rest of the day of your treatment. The inflammatory response the SkinPen sets in motion feels like a sunburn, but the process in the skin is very different. The next day, you’ll probably be pink and may still feel a bit irritated, but you can put on makeup and go about your normal activities.

You’ll feel the smoothness in your skin, particularly around the eyes and mouth right away. It’s hard to stop touching your skin, it’s so remarkable. You can expect to see all-over improvement in the weeks following your treatment. The best part is that you will continue to notice changes in your skin up to three to six months as new collagen begins to grow and your skin volume increases.SkinPen Micro needling

Bye bye ablative laser.

In the past we have used Pearl Fractional Laser to create tiny pore-sized holes deep in the skin to stimulate the skin’s collagen growth. The microchannels created by the SkinPen are accomplishing much the same thing…just without the week’s downtime. We are so impressed with the results that we have virtually replaced ablative fractional laser in favor of three SkinPen treatments.

Looking younger never gets old.

You’ll see immediate improvement but the best results come after a package of three treatments, one month apart. If you are treating acne scars, you may need six treatments one month apart. You can also alternate a SkinPen treatment with a Probiotic YouthBoost for even faster results. You can have a YouthBoost two weeks after your SkinPen treatment.

The question everyone asks once they see how smooth and tight their skin is looking is “How soon can I have another treatment?”

Sorry, you have to wait a month for the next one. But you can make your appointment as soon as you like.

SkinPen Package Cost
Series of 3, one month apart $950
Series of 6, one month apart $1,750
Add on: SkinPen of the Neck $200 each
3 SkinPen and 3 YouthBoost, alternating every two weeks $1,200

We are hearing that more and more providers have started microneedling active ingredients into the skin during and immediately after the procedure. This is a bad idea for two reasons. First, it’s overkill. Your skin doesn’t need it and it could cause a reaction. More importantly, back bar products are not sterile. That’s not necessary when you are having a facial, but for microneedling, it is.

What we do recommend: Take home a Rejuvenating Peptide Gel Mask to use the night of your treatment before you go to bed. Ahhhh. You’ll so thank us later.
